Updated SoC Benchmarks


Earlier in the year I did a comparison of a number of devices I currently owned, encompassing a number of Snapdragon 600 and 800 series devices, alongside a device using a Mediatek SoC.


I have recently had the Snapdragon 808-based Nextbit Robin and the Snapdragon 652-based Xiaomi Mi Max, whose SoCs I had not previously benchmarked, so I thought it would be worthwhile updating the graphs to encompass these new devices.


The list of devices below, like all the subsequent graphs, is ordered from the lowest Antutu score to the highest.

General Observations

The fact that the older Krait-based Snapdragon 805, as found in the Note 4, offers at least the performance of the newer Snapdragon 808 may come as a little surprise.

Similarly, the fact that a Snapdragon 650, which offers a similar 6 core design and is a 600 series SoC handily beats the 808 in CPU benchmarks may also be a surprise. 

Both these results show that the A57, the big core of ARMs big.LITTLE strategy, was enhanced substantially with the introduction of its A72 successor, as found in the Snapdragon 650/652.

It also shows that the primary reason Qualcomm went from Krait to ARM generic cores was to have 64-bit as a marketing feature rather than for performance reasons.

Observations on the Snapdragon 808
  1. The general CPU and GPU performance of the Snapdragon 808 is very similar to the older (but very highly clocked) Snapdragon 805.
  2. The CPU offers better single threaded performance to the 805 (A57 vs Krait), but slightly lower multi-threaded performance due to the 4xA53s not being as powerful as the remaining 2xKrait cores. Of course, the 808 does additionally support a 64-bit instruction set, unlike the 805.
  3. The GPU of the 808 is actually a little weaker than the 805. This may be expected due to the model numbers (Adreno 418 vs 420), but may come as a surprise if the model number is not known.
  4. The Vellamo benchmark is the only one to show a significant increase in performance over the 805-based Note 4. Both devices are based on Android 6.0.1.

Observations on the Snapdragon 652
  1. Overall, the Snapdragon 652 offers a reasonable performance boost over the lesser Snapdragon 650, solely due to the extra 2 x A57 cores.
  2. As expected, the graphics benchmarks are similar to the SD650 - the GPU is, of course, identical.
  3. Having 8 Cores vs 6 in the 650 is shown off in the Geekbench Multi-core score.
