The life of a help center article

The life of a help center article

Google has dozens of help centers both for external and internal products. Our Technical Writers work hard to keep up with new features, constantly adding new articles, reviewing user feedback and usage metrics to improve existing content. They work closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Marketing and other parts of the company to make sure their content is accurate and in line with the messages Google wants to convey.

The Google Analytics 360 Suite publishes 8 Help Centers, including Analytics, Tag Manager, Optimize, Attribution and others. With so much knowledge being shared, we thought it would be interesting to our users to understand how we produce this content and where our ideas come from. So we decided to talk to one of our Technical Writers, Rick Elliott, who is responsible for content published in the Data Studio Help Center.

Basically, all help content comes from asking the question: what does the user need? We hope the product is intuitive and easy to use so that extra help is not required, but there are always concepts or flows that require more explanation. So thats the start of a new Help Center article. Depending on the situation, a new article usually stems from 1 of 3 sources:
  1. We launch a new feature and it requires documentation.
  2. We get questions from users on the help forum that can be answered by a new article.
  3. A writer gets a bee in their bonnet and decides we need to document something more fully.
After that, its a process of interviewing the subject matter experts and trying it through lots of sample reports to make sure the flows are right. Once the first draft is done, it is sent out for review and comments, but there may be another round of review and feedback before it gets published. Another big step in the help center content flow is localization: we usually get the translated content out a week or two after publishing the English version.

Watch the video to learn more about how Rick developed massive Help sections such as the  chart references and the "warm welcome report".

    The Book of Life 2014

    The Book of Life 2014

    Genre

Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Romance

    Sinopsis

The Book of Life adalah salah satu film animasi terbaik di tahun 2014 kemarin, selain The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. Dibanding How to Train Your Dragon 2, Big Hero 6,  atau Song of The Sea sekalipun, The Book of Life jauh lebih bagus (dengan berbagai alasan).

Getting Back to Real Life yeah we work and stuff

Getting Back to Real Life yeah we work and stuff

Before we left for Sussex a couple of weeks ago, I was talking to a friend about the upcoming trip. As I was describing some activity we were anticipating, she cut me off to ask a very fair and very pertinent question. She couldnt have cared less about the hike I was trying to sell her. What she wanted to know was how I got all the weekend chores done and was able to go back to work on the Monday after a trip without the whole house being in a state of chaos.

This is such a mom perspective. I remember one of our first weekend trips began with just a bit of tension when I returned home from work on a Friday afternoon and Jeremy proudly proclaimed that we were all set to go. My eyes whirled around in my head moving from the mugs in the sink to the crumbs under the dining room table to the full recycling bin. I was sputtering, huffing, and banging my way around the house cleaning up while Jeremy looked on in a state of total bewilderment. He honestly could not understand what the big deal was. If we werent there, who cared if the house was a little messy?

Well, I did and I still do. And God love him, he has come a long way on this one. He now knows that the camper isnt pulling out of the driveway if there is any food debris whatsoever in the kitchen sink strainer. He loves our weekend trips enough not to fight city hall on this one.

Another strategy for making these short trips manageable is that we never get home late on Sundays. We always drive back during afternoon nap and usually pull in around 3:30 or so. This gives us a good two hours before dinner to pull things together around the house. I am inside unpacking and doing laundry, Jeremy is outside hosing out the truck and mowing the lawn, and the boys are revisiting every toy that they missed over that long 48 hours. It sounds like we are doing our best to fulfill every suburban family stereotype out there...

So we have our routine down, and it usually goes pretty smoothly. The only thing I really struggle with every time is Sunday dinner. I never have a lot in the fridge since I try to use everything up before we go away. And I always want something very quick and simple since I am also trying to get all those chores done.

Last week I came up with the perfect solution: sweet potato risotto. I chopped up an onion and some garlic and two great, big sweet potatoes and sauteed them for about five minutes. Then I added two cups of risotto and sauteed it for another five minutes. I had a box of chicken stock in the pantry and I just kept adding it to the rice (about a half a cup at a time) until the risotto was soft and creamy (al dente is over-rated with toddlers in the house). A handful of Parmesan, a side of arugula salad, and dinner was served. You can get pretty precious with risotto, and it can be a time consuming dish if you are really particular about the results. Lucky for me, this wasnt an episode of Chopped, and my boys--all three of them--gobbled it up.

My extra special bonus: there was plenty left over for everyones lunch the next day. Clean up was a snap, the boys were in bed, and I was on the couch watching The Amazing Race by eight that evening. The perfect end to a perfect weekend.

The Road Not Taken My Imagined Life as A Communist

The Road Not Taken My Imagined Life as A Communist

So Diver Ed was a blast, but we got off the boat in sore need of some facilities and some grub. The boat tour departs from the College of the Atlantic--what you havent heard of it?--a small liberal arts school with an environmental focus in Bar Harbor, Maine.

We wandered into the Dorr Museum on campus, desperately searching for a bathroom. Instead we found the most stunning, touching taxidermy exhibit I have ever seen. Caught you off-guard on that one, right? I am dead (ha-ha) serious. The individual exhibits, all created by students, are arranged to be representative of the natural world in Maine and thus have multiple animals in scenes that are arrestingly honest. I could have spent much more time there, wandering around and saying interesting things like, "oh my god, look at that porcupine," but unfortunately there was a swivel stool and a computer behind a curtain...a setup that made the little campers just about lose their minds with inappropriate glee.

We got out of there fast but not before asking the volunteer at the desk about nearby lunch options. She recommended the on-campus cafeteria and, I will be honest, I kind of smirked in a self-possessed kind of way. However, I have two-year olds and it was lunch time and how miserable do you want to get, really? So we ambled on over to the mess hall where every educational decision I have ever made in my life was called into question.

Honestly, if you go to Acadia and eat any meal at any other place, you are making a very silly decision. In fact, the next time we are up there we may just park the pop-up in one of their parking lots and see what happens. They focus on the use of local, organic, and sustainable food and all baked goods are made from scratch. Great, right? Now the awesome part-- three adults and two children went through the line and got fajitas with fresh guacamole and arugula salad and seafood chowder for a grand total of $11.50. Say, what? It gets better. The cashier told my husband if we spend twelve dollars then we could get unlimited drinks and baked goods for free. My husband was practically throwing singles at the woman.

You know when you have those what would my life be like if I had... moments? This was definitely one of those for me. But dont worry--I have a plan and it centers around my very malleable children. Regardless of the fact that my boys seem most at home swinging wiffle bats at each others heads, I have formed the vision of future parent weekends at the College of the Atlantic. However they might feel, it would suit us very well indeed.
