Test Estimation Techniques

Test Estimation Techniques

Estimation very important thing in project, estimation nothing but estimating the effort that is require to test particular thing, estimation is more of a time required to test the software application. There are certain level of formulas and techniques which help to estimate the software effort required to test the particular piece of software.

As we know time is very important in IT industries, as we do each and every thing by define the certain time span. Sometime estimation can also go wrong, there are some unavoidable circumstances which can cause the delay. Means that even you do estimation but you cannot sure that everything will go as you estimate.

Lets move ahead, I will tell you how you can estimate the time and effort required to evaluate any software. Basically estimation is mostly done by the QA manager some time it is also done by QA Team, but estimation is not done Junior QA. You might thing why not junior QA? So the reason is to estimate testing effort required, QA manager use his past experience and as based on those past experience QA manager estimate the time required for the testing. Estimation all comes from the past experience on similar project and resources available for testing.

Lets start, suppose there is a software project and we have to estimate the testing effort for that particular project. Let consider we are developing the software by using waterfall model. And client want this project in 12 month. So there are 6 phases in waterfall model. And testing phase is 4th so if we have 12 month and 6 phase then each phase will have 2 months,

So we would get 2 month for testing. Now we have to estimate and divide these two month to testing activities. We know in testing there are three main activity which are Test Planning, Test Design and Test case executions. So will we divide these two month in these three activity so each activity will get the 1/3 month time for each. Means two month means 60 day by excluding Saturday Sunday we would get 40 days. Means for each activity we would get approximately 13 days.

There equation as of now is 13 day for test planning, 13 day for test design and 13 days for test case execution. Not only the time but we have to consider the resources available for test. Lets say we have 2 resources. Consider each resource will work for 8 hour a day means 2 resources X 13 day X 8 hours = so we will get 208 hour for each activity. So this is how we can get the hour for each activity.

But we know there many unexpected circumstances which can occurs, once of them is someone is got the better opportunity and he is leaving the project. So this may happens now a days peoples are switching the job very frequently. So QA manager also need to take care of such a situation, for this situation QA manager should allocate sometime for Knowledge transfer. Lets say for KT around 8 to 15 % should be allocated. So from 208 +208+208 = 624 hours we need to allocate around 12% time for KT, it also depends on complexity of the project. 12% comes around 60 hours means we would get only 564 hours for all testing activity.

There are also sub-activity in testing phase, like in planning, design and execution we have following sub-activities.

  • Requirement gathering
  • Test Scenario creation
  • Test Case Creation
  • Test Data collection and Creation
  • Review

Above all few sub-activities, again these activities can varies as per the company. We for each phase we get 188 hour (564 hours divided by 3) each. So we need to allocate the time to above mentioned points which is depends on the complexity of the functionality. By having detail knowledge of functionality and its complexity you can allocate the time for above mentioned point. And if possible put some buffer time as we know sometime or many time development activity gets delayed.

I hope you might some idea of how to estimate for testing. Its bit confusion but if you try to understand it then definitely you will get this easily.

Using Robotium to test Android “Text Fields”

Using Robotium to test Android “Text Fields”

Robotium supports various functions to test Android single and multi line text fields.
The following are few APIs supported by Robotium to test the Text Fields,
  • searchEditText(String text)
  • clickOnEditText(int index)
  • clearEditText(int index)
  • typeText(int index, String text)
  • enterText(int index, String text)
Let us write a test case for the Sample project shown on the right side,

Test case for verifying the Text Fields :

Steps :
  1. Wait for the activity to launch
  2. Enter a text in the Text Field
  3. Verify the text entered in the Text Field
  4. Clear the Text Entered in the Text Field
  5. Enter a new Test again and Verify the text entered.
Test Code:
 1: public void testEditField() throws Exception {

 2: solo.waitForActivity("MainActivity");

 3:

 4: solo.clickOnEditText(0);

 5: String strInput = "Sample code 1";

 6: solo.enterText(0, strInput);

 7: boolean actual = solo.searchEditText(strInput);

 8: assertEquals("text entered is not matching",true, actual);

 9:

 10: solo.clearEditText(0);

 11: strInput = "Sample code 2";

 12: solo.typeText(0, strInput);

 13: actual = solo.searchEditText(strInput);

 14: assertEquals("text entered is not matching",true, actual);

 15: }

Explanation:
  1. solo.waitforActivity( ), is to wait for the activity to launch

  2. Enter Text in the Text Field :  to enter a text in the Text filed, both solo.enterText() and solo.typeText() can be used.

  3. in enterText(int index, String text),  index is the index of the Text Field.

    • if multiple Text Fields exists, first one will be assigned an index of 0, second one will get an index 1 and so on..  index increases from Top to Bottom or Left to Right

    • Verify the Text Entered :  to verify the text contained in the Text Filed, solo.searchEditText() can be used. it returns True, if pattern matches otherwise return False

  4. Clear the Text in the Text Field : to clear the Text exist in the Text Field, solo.clearEditText() can be used.

  5. assertEquals(), can be used to assert True/False

Use Robotium to test Android Checkbox

Use Robotium to test Android Checkbox

Check Boxes in Android can be tested using Robotium. The following are different functions supported by Robotium to check the Checkbox functionality.
  • getCurrentCheckBoxes()
  • isCheckBoxChecked(int index)
  • isCheckBoxChecked(String text)
  • clickOnCheckBox(int index)
Let us see the Usage of these functions with a sample test case for the project shown on the Right side (it is a second activity in the Example Project1 used in the previous posts).
The Activity contains three checkboxes, let us write some sample code to test them.

Test case for Android Check Boxes :

Steps :
  1. Click on the Check box Android
  2. Click on the Check box iPhone
  3. Verify the Status of check boxes
  4. Unselect the Checkboxes iPhone and Android
  5. Verify the Status again
Test Code :

public void testCheckBoxes() throws Exception {

 solo.waitForActivity("MainActivity");

 //click on Image Button

 solo.clickOnImageButton(0);

 //look for checkbox text

 actual = solo.searchText("Windows");

 assertEquals("Windows text not found",true, actual);

 //select checkbox Android

 solo.clickOnCheckBox(0);

 //select checkbox iPhone

 solo.clickOnCheckBox(2);

 //check the Status of checkbox Android

 boolean actual1 = solo.isCheckBoxChecked(0);

 assertEquals("Android is not Selected",true, actual1);

 //check the Status of checkbox iPhone

 boolean actual2 = solo.isCheckBoxChecked(2);

 assertEquals("iPhone is not Selected",true, actual2);

 // unselect Android and iPhone

 solo.clickOnCheckBox(0);

 solo.clickOnCheckBox(2);

 //check the status again

 actual1 = solo.isCheckBoxChecked(0);

 assertEquals("Android OS is Selected",false, actual);

 actual2 = solo.isCheckBoxChecked(2);

 assertEquals("iPhone is Selected",flase, actual2);

}
Explanation:

  1. Select/Unselect Checkbox : solo.clickOnCheckBox() can be for both Select and Unselect checkbox. First time, when used this function, it will select the option and second time when performed the same action, it will unselect the Checkbox.
  2. Verify the Status of Checkboxes : solo.isCheckBoxChecked() function is used to verify the status of Checkbox. function returns true, if it is selected and false otherwise.
  3. Please note that, in the assert statements, while verifying the status of unselected check boxes, we used the expected result as false.

This is not a test Google Optimize now free — for everyone

This is not a test Google Optimize now free — for everyone

Businesses often have one big question for us: How can they better understand their website visitors and deliver more relevant, engaging experiences?

To help businesses test and take action, last spring we launched our enterprise-class A/B testing and personalization product, Google Optimize 360. We saw great demand, so we made it more accessible with a free beta version last fall and that response also exceeded our expectations, with over 250,000 users requesting an Optimize account.

Today were very excited to announce that both Optimize and Optimize 360 are now out of beta. And Optimize is now immediately available to everyone for free. This is not a test: You can start using it today.

Easy to implement

A recent survey showed 45% of small and medium businesses dont optimize their websites through A/B testing.1 The two most common reasons given were a "lack of employee resources" and "lack of knowledge to get started."

If youre part of that 45%, Optimize is a great choice for you. Optimize has many of the same features as Optimize 360. Its just right for small and medium-sized businesses who need powerful testing, but dont have the budget or team resources for an enterprise-level solution. Optimize is easy for anyone to set up. Early users of Optimize have been happy with how easy it is to use. In fact, its built right on top of Analytics, so if youre already an Analytics user youll add just a single line of code to get Optimize up and running. With just a few clicks more, you can start using your Analytics data to design experiments and improve the online experience for your users.

Easy to use

Worried about having to hire someone to run A/B tests on your site, or frustrated about not knowing how to do it yourself? Dont be. The Optimize visual editor allows for WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) editing so you can change just about anything on your site with a drag and a drop. And more advanced users will enjoy the ability to edit raw HTML or add JavaScript or CSS rules directly in the editor.

Powerful targeting capabilities within Optimize allow you to serve the right experiences to just the right set of users. And you have flexible URL targeting capabilities to create simple or complex rules for the pages where you want your experiment to run. To find out if a targeting rule youve set will apply to a specific URL on your site, use the new Optimize URL tester. Just enter a URL and the tester will immediately tell you if that page is a match for your targeting rule.

Easy to understand

Optimize calculates results based on your existing Analytics metrics and objectives using advanced Bayesian methods, so the reporting shows you exactly what you need to know to make better and faster decisions.

Weve also upgraded the improvement overview (see image above) to help you quickly see how an experiment affects the metrics you care about most, whether that means purchases, pageviews, session lengths, or whatever else youre tracking in Analytics.

Easy to try

Leading businesses are building a culture of growth that embraces the use of data and testing to improve the customer experience every day. Were delighted to offer Optimize to everyone to help deliver better user experiences across the board.

As of today, Optimize is available in over 180 countries. (A special note for our European users: Weve added a new data processing amendment to the Google Optimize Terms of Service that you may review in the UI and accept if you wish.) And were not done yet: Keep an eye out for more improvements and announcements in the future.

What are you waiting for? Try it right now!

Happy Optimizing!

Using Robotium to test Android Toggle Buttons

Using Robotium to test Android Toggle Buttons

Robotium supports various APIs to test Android Toggle Button functionality

the following are some of the APIs supported by Robotium to test the Toggle Buttons

  • searchToggleButton(String text)
  • clickOnToggleButton(String name)
  • isToggleButtonChecked(int index)
  • isToggleButtonChecked(String text)
Let us write a test case for the Example project shown on the Right side, which has one toggle button

Test case for testing Toggle Button :

Steps:
  1. Search for the Toggle Button
  2. Assert True/False based on the search result
  3. Click on the Toggle Button
  4. Check if Toggle Button status is changed or not?
  5. Click on the Toggle Button again
  6. Check whether the Toggle Button status is changed or not?
Test code:

 1: public void testToggleButton() throws Exception {

 2: solo.waitForActivity("MainActivity");

 3:

 4: //search for toggle button

 5: actual = solo.searchToggleButton("OFF");

 6: assertEquals("Toggle Button not found",true, actual);

 7:

 8: //Turn ON toggle button

 9: solo.clickOnToggleButton("OFF");

 10: actual = solo.isToggleButtonChecked(0);

 11: assertEquals("Toggle Button is OFF",true, actual);

 12:

 13: //Turn OFF toggle button

 14: solo.clickOnToggleButton("ON");

 15: actual = solo.isToggleButtonChecked(0);

 16: assertEquals("Toggle Button is ON",false, actual);

 17:

 18: }
Explanation:
  1. Search for Toggle Button : solo.searchToggleButton() is used to search for toggle buttons in the current activity

    • the functions returns true if the Toggle Button with the given string is found otherwise return false

  2. Click on the Toggle Button : solo.clickOnToggleButton() is used to click on Toggle Button with the given string

    • on enabling the Toggle Button, its text is changed from OFF to ON. hence, second time we modified the search pattern to ON

  3. Check the Status of Toggle Button : isToggleButtonChecked() is used to check the status of Toggle Button

    • argument passed can be a String or Index
    • returns true if the toggle button is checked, otherwise, return false.

Use Robotium to test Android Image Buttons

Use Robotium to test Android Image Buttons

As it is common that most of the Android developers will use Image Buttons instead Text buttons, it is important criteria to test Image buttons.

Robotium has support for Image Buttons. The following APIs can be used to test Image Button functionalities,
  • getImageButton(int index)
  • clickOnImageButton(int index)
Let us see the usage of these APIs with and a our second example project shown on the Right side, which is the starting activity containing four Image Buttons at the bottom (Alarm, Gallery, Music and Home)

Test case for Image Buttons :

Steps :
  1. Click on the Image Button Alarm
  2. go back
  3. Click on the Image Button Music
Test Code :
 1: public void testCheckBoxes() throws Exception {

 2: solo.waitForActivity("AlarmPlusActivity");

 3:

 4: //click on Alarm Image Button

 5: solo.clickOnImageButton(0);

 6: assertTrue(solo.searchText("Add alarm")); //this text appears in the next activity

 7: //go to previous screen

 8: solo.goBack();

 9: //click on Gallery button

 10: solo.clickOnImageButton(1);

 11:

 12: }

Explanation :

  1. Click on Image Button : solo.clickOnImageButton(), is used to click on the Image button, which accepts only index number as argument.
  2. Return to Previous screen, solo.goBack(), is used to go to Previous screen.
  3. index of the Image buttons increase from Left to Right. Alarm button has 0, Gallery button has 1 and Home button with index

Use Robotium to test Android Progress bar Seek bar and Rating bar

Use Robotium to test Android Progress bar Seek bar and Rating bar

Robotium Supports various functions to support Progress bar, Seek bar and Rating bar. it uses the following functions to support these views.
  • getCurrentProgressBars()
  • setProgressBar(int index, int progress)
  • setProgressBar(android.widget.ProgressBar progressBar, int progress)
setProgressBar(), is the one function, which can set the progress of Progress bar, Seek bar and Rating bar.
Let us see one example Test case to the sample project shown on the Right side,

Test case for Progress Bar :

Steps:
  1. Set the Progress bar status from Zero to High
  2. Set the Seek bar position from Minimum to Maximum
  3. Set the Rating Bar from 1 start to 5 stars
Test Code :
 1: public void testProgressBar() throws Exception {

 2:

 3: solo.waitForActivity("MainActivity");

 4:      // set the Progree Bar Status

 5: solo.setProgressBar(0, 10);

 6: solo.setProgressBar(0, 20);

 7: solo.setProgressBar(0, 30);

 8: solo.setProgressBar(0, 40);

 9: solo.setProgressBar(0, 50);

 10: solo.setProgressBar(0, 10);

 11: // set the Seek Bar Position

 12: solo.setProgressBar(1, 10);

 13: solo.setProgressBar(1, 20);

 14: solo.setProgressBar(1, 30);

 15: solo.setProgressBar(1, 40);

 16: solo.setProgressBar(1, 50);

 17: solo.setProgressBar(1, 10);

 18: // set the Rating Bar status

 19: solo.setProgressBar(2, 2);

 20: solo.setProgressBar(2, 3);

 21: solo.setProgressBar(2, 5);

 22: solo.setProgressBar(2, 7);

 23: solo.setProgressBar(2, 9);

 24: solo.setProgressBar(2, 10);

 25: }

Explanation :
  1. Set the Progress bar and Seek bar position : solo.setProgressBar() is used to set the position of status bar, the position has to be specified in Integer number say 10,20,30,40 so on.. i hope max value is 100. just, try with different numbers and see the change in position.

  2. Set the Rating bar : solo.setProgressBar(), is used to set the Rating bar. use the numeric value from 1 to 10.

  3. Since there are 3 similar items(Progress bar, Seek bar and Rating bar), index will starts from 0 to 2.
