Guide to setting up a Xiaomi MIUI phone for a more Stock Android experience

While I love Xiaomis hardware, there are a number of issues I have with MIUIs default settings and application handling.

In this post I will outline which settings I modify in order to provide a more usable experience, at least for my tastes.

Note that the instructions below assume you have at least installed the Google Play store on your device and that it is running MIUI 8. Personally I use the latest Xiaomi.eu firmware on all my Xiaomi devices.

Launcher

While the default MIUI launcher is fine for some, it is not to my taste. I prefer the stock Google Now launcher.

The following steps are required to set the Google Now launcher as the default.

1. Install the Google app and the Google Now Launcher from the Play store
2. Open the Google app from within the Play store & set it up.
3. Go into the Security app & select Permissions
4. In Autostart, enable the Google and Google Now apps
5. Reboot the phone
6. Go to Settings / Installed Apps / Defaults.
7. Change the Launcher to Google App.
8. Press the Home button and set up the Launcher
9. Go into the Security app & select Battery
10. Select App battery saver

11. For Google App and Google Now Launcher, select No restrictions and Background location Allow.

Battery & App Management

MIUI is extremely restrictive on providing Apps with the permissions they need and preventing apps from running in the background.

This often leads to significant issues, such as missing notifications due to MIUI having killed the app in the background.

Fixing application restrictions involves a number of steps.

Autostart Permissions

1. Go into the Security app & select Permissions
2. In Autostart, enable any app that should be allowed to start when the phones starts - e.g. email clients, messaging apps, social networks, alarm clock / timers, apps that need to sync data etc.

Background Processes

1. Go to Settings / Battery & Performance
2. Go to Manage apps battery usage
3. Turn Off Power Saving Modes

Battery saver restrictions

1. Go into the Security app & select Battery
2. Ensure Battery Saver is Off
3. Select App battery saver

4. Against each app you wish to keep running in the background, click on the app

5. Select No restrictions and Background location Allow.

Be sure to revisit this when you install new apps you wish to run in the background

Developer Options

There are two useful flags in Developer Options to reduce the aggressiveness of killing background processes. To enable Developer Options go to:

Settings / About Phone & press 7 times on the "MIUI version" section to Enable Developer Options (Settings / Additional Settings / Developer Options)

1. Set Memory Optimization to Off.

2. Set Turn on MIUI Optinization to Off.

Application defaults

Once all your apps are installed on the device, it is a good idea to set the default applications for each category, e.g. Browser, Gallery, Email, Video etc

Go to Settings / Installed Apps / Defaults to select your favourite app in each category.

Languages

English in MIUI is defined as American English, but as a UK resident, I prefer to set the phone up to reflect UK preferences, such as date formats and keyboard layouts.

1. Go to Settings / Additional settings

2. Go to Language & input

3. If using the Google keyboard, select Google keyboard

4. Deselect Use system language

5. Enable English (UK) and disable English (US)

6. In Dictionary, select Sync learned words and sync to your Google account

1. Back in Language & Input, chose Spell checker
2. Change the Language to English (United Kingdom)

1. In Language & Input, chose Text-to-speech output
2. Configure the Google Text-to-speech Engine
3. Change the Language to English (United Kingdom)

4. Install the TTS voice data for English (United Kingdom)

Adding Languages

If you wish to add new languages to your phone, or change the system language from, for example, English (United States) to English (United Kingdom), the MoreLangs app is very useful.

1. Install and run MoreLangs

2. Select your desired language

3. If your phone is not rooted, click "Make it work"

4. Click on the link to the tutorial. This will require connecting the device to a PC and using ADB to grant the app the relevant permissions.

NOTE: To enable USB Debugging, you will need to go into Settings / About phone and click on MIUI version 7 times.

Go to Settings / Additional settings / Developer options and enable USB debugging

In essence, you will need to perform the following adb command:

adb shell pm grant sightidea.com.setlocale android.permission.CHANGE_CONFIGURATION

5. Once performed, re-open the app and select the desired language again.

Notifications

By default, MIUI does not show Notification icons on the homescreen. To enable this:

1. Go to Settings / Notification & status bar
2. Enable "Show notification icons"

Battery percentage

MIUI allows the user to enable a battery percentage display next to the battery icon.

1. Go to Settings / Notification & status bar
2. Change Battery indicator from Graphical to Percentage.

Location

A number of apps, such as Mapping and Routing apps, require High Accuracy location.

1. Go to Settings / Additional Settings / Privacy / Location

2. Change Location Mode to High Accuracy

Do Not Disturb

I personally love built-in Do Not Disturb, to prevent notifications and unwanted calls from waking me up in the night.

1. Go to Settings / Do not disturb
2. Set this up to your preferences, including exceptions.

Data Usage

The Data Usage feature can be useful to ensure you do not go over your monthly data allowance.

1. Open the Security App
2. Go to Data usage and Set data usage limit
3. Set the Warning level and reset data

Flashing a Global ROM on a Snapdragon based Xiaomi phone without a Bootloader Unlock

One of the limitations with Xiaomis new bootloader locking policy is that a user can only unlock the bootloader of one device every 30 days, and then only after you have successfully applied for your Mi account to have this right.

When importing a Xiaomi phone from China, you will find that the installed ROM will either be a genuine Chinese Xiaomi ROM, without pre-installed Google Services and with some settings not tailored for the western market, or a shop ROM, which has Google Services and western-centric settings, but will never get any updates.

Some of Xiaomis devices (usually those available in other markets, such as India) have Global ROMs, which are official Xiaomi ROMs with western-centric settings that will get updates for the supported life of the device. It is these that are the most suitable for the western market - if they are available!

In a previous post, I outlined the method by which you could change from the stock Chinese ROM to a Global ROM, but this involved requesting a bootloader unlock. It also assumes you have a stock Chinese ROM and not a modified shop ROM.

In this post I will describe how to flash the Global ROM without requiring an unlocked bootloader from any firmware.

This should also work to get back to a stock Chinese image if your device is shipped with a shop ROM.

Suitability

This procedure is suitable for all Xiaomi devices who have a Snapdragon based SoC, e.g. the Mi 5, Mi 4s, Redmi Note 3 Pro, Redmi 3, Redmi 3 Pro etc.

Preparation

We will need to download the following ROM images and tools before proceeding:

Mi Flash tool
Global Fastboot ROM (for the relevant device)
15 second adb installer (if adb and fastboot are not already installed on your PC)

Stage 1 - Installing the Mi Flash tool

Install the Mi Flash tool. This will copy the relevant Qualcomm drivers onto the hard drive in addition to installing the tool. Dont worry about any instructions that pop up during and after installation. Just go ahead and install.

Stage 2 - Enabling USB Debugging

To use adb, we will need to enable USB debugging.

On the phone, Go to:

Settings / About Phone & press 7 times on the "MIUI version" section to Enable Developer Options

Settings / Additional Settings / Developer Options / Enable USB Debugging

Stage 3 - Reboot to EDL (Download) mode

In order to bypass the locked bootloader, we need to enter EDL mode. This is accomplished via adb.

adb devices (to make sure the phone is connected)
adb reboot edl

Stage 4 - Change the QHUSB_BULK driver to the Qualcomm HS-USB driver

In EDL mode, we need to change the default QHUSB_BULK driver that Windows installs with the proper Qualcomm HS-USB driver that is present in the Mi Flash tool installation folder.

1. Open Device Manager on the PC and locate the QHUSB_BULK driver.
2. Right click & Update Driver Software
3. Select Browse my computer for driver software
4. Locate C:Program Files (x86)XiaomiMiPhoneQualcomm
5. Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
6. Select Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008

At this stage, I got an error message saying that the USB device could not be recognised. I powered the device off and back on by holding down the Power button and went back to Stage 3 to return to EDL mode.

Once complete, the new Qualcomm driver should be present in Device Manager in the following location:

Ports (COM & LPT) / Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008

Stage 5 - Unpacking the Fastboot driver

Locate the downloaded Fastboot .tgz file and unpack it completely. I used 7-Zip to accomplish this.

Unpack the .tgz file to a .tar
Unpack the tar file to a folder containing the image

Stage 6 - Flashing via Mi Flash

Run the Mi Flash tool, that is now installed on the PC.

1. Locate the unzipped global images folder using the Browse button (where the batch files are located)
2. Select Refresh, which should pick up the device.
3. Select "Flash all" as the flash option
4. Hit the Flash button.

Once complete, remove the cable, power down and reboot.

If flash fails

While the procedure worked perfectly for me, if for any reason the flash failed and you need to re-enter EDL mode without being able to boot, you can do the following:

1. Enter Fastboot mode through Power & Volume Down
2. Type the following fastboot commands

fastboot devices (to ensure the phone is connected)
fastboot oem edl

The above should return you to EDL mode.

Unlocking the Bootloader on a MIUI 8 Xiaomi phone

It has been a while since I have unlocked the bootloader of a Xiaomi phone, and the process seems to have changed somewhat since I last performed this procedure, so I thought I would document the process.

There are a number of stages to this process, which takes a minimum of 3 days to complete:

1. Register for a Mi account & log into the phone with this account, if not already done
2. Request the Unlock privilege for your Mi account
3. Enrol the device for an Unlock
4. Wait 72 hours
5. Unlock the bootloader with the Windows Mi Flash Unlock tool.

Mi Account

The Unlock tool will require that the phone is logged into the same Xiaomi account in order for the unlock process to be successful, so ensure you have set yourself up with a Mi account and signed into the phone using this account.

I tend to ensure I have posted a few items on the MIUI forum before I make a request as, during the request process, it states that they will take the activity of your account into consideration when they are making the decision to grant you the unlock privilege.

If the request is denied, you have to wait 30 days to re-apply, so better to be safe than sorry!

Request the Unlock privilege

The first thing you will need to do is to make sure you have applied for Unlock rights for your Mi account. This can be done here:

Try to make the given reason for unlocking something specific, rather than generic, as your request is more likely to be granted this way.

The time between application and hearing back from the MIUI team seems to vary. The last time I applied the request was granted after just a few minutes, but previous applications have taken days!

Setting up the phone

Before you can successfully unlock the phone using the unlocking tool you will need to enrol the phone into the scheme, which is performed in Developer Options.

1. Go to Settings / About Phone
2. Press MIUI version 7 times to enable Developer options
3. Go to Settings / Additional Settings / Developer options
4. Click on Mi Unlock status
5. Click on Add account and device

Note that if you get an error code of 86006 then download and flash the latest Developer ROM through the built-in Updater app:

Three Day Wait

After enrolling the phone, Xiaomi require that 72 hours (3 days) must elapse before the bootloader can be unlocked with Xiaomis MiFlash Unlock Tool.

If you attempt to unlock during this period, the process will get to 99% before displaying an error message requesting you wait 72 hours.

Unlocking the bootloader

Once the phone is enrolled and 72 hours have passed, you can use the Unlock tool.

This can be downloaded from the MIUI Unlock site once your unlock request has been granted:

On a Windows PC, extract the zip file to a temporary folder and run the miflash_unlock.exe tool.

Log on using the same Mi account that you have signed into the device with and follow the on screen prompts, which involve booting the phone into Fastboot with Power and Volume Down.

Google offering free phone calls to Belgium and Turkey in light of recent events

Google has tweeted a few hours ago that it was going to make all calls to Belgium and Turkey free in response to the recent bombing in Brussels and the ongoing attacks of violence going on in Turkey.

Google says that all calls to Belgium and Turkey will be free through hangouts via the desktop page or respective platform�s (iOS or Android) hangouts app. Calls to landlines in either Turkey or Belgium will be free and all calls to Belgium�s major wireless carrier subscribers: Lycamobile, Mobistar, Proximus, and Telenet will be free as well.

Google has also been pushing out Google Now cards with transit information and direct links to the Government Crisis Centre for locals as well as posted the same information for related Google searches.

VAIOs Windows 10 powered Phone Biz is now available for purchase

Remember the Phone Biz, which was announced by erstwhile Sony brand VAIO back in February this year? Well, the device is now available for purchase, although currently only in Sonys home country of Japan.

The 5.5-inch, Win10-powered handset went on pre-order last month, and shipments have now begun. If you missed the pre-order opportunity, youll be glad to know that phone is also available for purchase from the VAIO store.

Whats worth mentioning is that the Phone Biz is listed on VAIOs website for JPY 59,184 (around $535), which is different (and considerably up) from the JPY 50,000 ($430) price tag that the company revealed when the device was announced.

For those in the US, sadly, the company has already confirmed that it currently has no plans to launch to device in the country.
